Most people expect their eyesight or hearing to change with age. What often comes as a surprise is that the sense of smell can change too. Because it usually happens gradually, many people don’t notice it until familiar scents seem weaker than they once were or food no longer tastes quite the same.

A reduced sense of smell can affect more than your enjoyment of meals. It also plays an important role in keeping you safe. Being able to smell smoke, a gas leak, or food that’s gone off can help prevent accidents around the home. If these warning signs become harder to detect, it’s worth taking the change seriously.

There are many possible reasons for a reduced sense of smell. A cold, allergies, nasal polyps, certain medications, and natural ageing can all contribute. In some cases, it may be linked to an underlying medical condition that needs further assessment. If you’ve noticed a sudden or significant change, it’s a good idea to speak with your GP rather than assuming it’s simply part of getting older.

If food has become less appealing, try experimenting with herbs, spices, citrus, or different textures to make meals more enjoyable. Avoid adding too much salt or sugar to compensate for reduced flavour, as there are healthier ways to bring meals to life.

It’s also worth checking that your smoke alarms are working properly and replacing the batteries as recommended. If you have gas appliances, consider installing a carbon monoxide alarm if appropriate for your home. These simple precautions provide an extra layer of protection if your sense of smell isn’t as reliable as it once was.

Many of us don’t think about our sense of smell until it changes. Yet it’s closely connected to our safety, our appetite, and even the memories that certain scents can bring back.

If you’ve noticed that everyday smells aren’t as familiar as they used to be, don’t ignore it. A simple conversation with your GP could help identify the cause and give you greater confidence in your health.
