When Your Legs Feel Heavy After Sitting

You get up from your favourite chair after watching television and notice that your legs feel unusually heavy. Your ankles look puffier than they did that morning, or your calves feel tight after a long car journey. It is easy to blame a day spent sitting down, but recurring swelling or heaviness can sometimes point to an underlying health issue.

One possible explanation is fluid collecting in the tissues, known as oedema. It can occur when you remain in one position for a long time, but it can also be associated with certain medicines or conditions affecting the veins, heart, or kidneys. The appearance of swollen legs alone cannot tell you the cause, so persistent or unexplained changes deserve medical attention.

Pay attention to whether both legs are affected or whether one looks noticeably different. Does the swelling ease overnight, or does it remain when you wake up? Have your shoes or socks started leaving deeper marks than usual? Mention any accompanying symptoms, including aching, skin changes, or breathlessness, when speaking with your GP.

If the heaviness develops after sitting for a while, gentle movement may help. Try getting up regularly, taking short walks around the house, and avoiding long periods with your legs hanging down. When resting, you may find it comfortable to elevate your legs on a cushion. However, these measures should not replace medical advice if swelling is new, persistent, or getting worse.

Review your medicines with your GP or pharmacist if the problem began after a prescription change. Some medicines can contribute to ankle swelling, but do not stop taking them without professional guidance. Your clinician may also consider whether circulation problems or another health condition needs investigation.

There are symptoms you should not ignore. Sudden swelling in one leg, particularly with pain, warmth, or redness, needs urgent medical assessment because it may indicate a blood clot. If leg swelling occurs alongside sudden breathlessness or chest pain, call 111 in New Zealand immediately.

Heavy legs are not always a sign of something serious, but a noticeable change is worth investigating rather than simply putting it down to age. Paying attention to when the swelling appears, how it changes, and what other symptoms accompany it can help your healthcare provider work out the next steps.
