A little stiffness when you first wake up can seem harmless. Perhaps your fingers take a few minutes to loosen while you’re making breakfast, or you notice that opening a jar is harder than it used to be. Occasional stiffness is common, but persistent morning stiffness can sometimes point to a condition worth discussing with your GP.

Osteoarthritis is one possible cause. The gradual wear and changes in joints can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement, particularly in the hands, knees, hips, and spine. Symptoms often develop slowly and may become more noticeable after periods of inactivity.

However, morning stiffness isn’t always caused by osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions can also affect the joints. The pattern of your symptoms can provide useful clues, particularly if several joints are affected or stiffness lasts for a prolonged period after waking.

Pay attention to what else is happening. Are your fingers swollen? Do your joints feel warm? Is the stiffness affecting both hands? Does it improve as you move around? Keeping track of these changes can help your healthcare provider understand what’s happening.

Gentle movement can often help stiff joints. Simple hand exercises, stretching, walking, or other low-impact activities may help maintain mobility. If an activity consistently causes pain, however, don’t push through it without seeking advice.

Heat can also feel soothing for some people. A warm shower or soaking your hands in warm water may help loosen stiff joints at the beginning of the day. Your GP or physiotherapist can suggest exercises and treatments suited to your particular symptoms.

You don’t have to accept worsening joint stiffness as something you simply have to live with. Finding out what’s causing it can open the door to better treatment and help you keep using your hands comfortably for everyday tasks.
