Telehealth: Things You Need to Get Started

Seeing your doctor from the comfort of your favourite chair. No traffic, no waiting room, no searching for parking. That’s the simple promise of telehealth, and more people are discovering how easy it can be once they know what to expect.

If the idea still feels a little unfamiliar, that’s completely normal. Most of us grew up with in-person doctor visits, and trying something new can feel intimidating at first. The good news is that telehealth doesn’t require much. Once you have a few basics in place, you’ll be ready to have a video visit with your doctor in no time.

Here’s everything you need to get started.

A Device with a Camera and Microphone

You don’t need anything fancy. A smartphone, tablet, or laptop will work just fine.

If your device is a few years old, don’t worry. Most telehealth visits only need a basic front-facing camera and microphone, which nearly every device already has built in.

A Reliable Internet Connection

Telehealth visits work best with a steady Wi-Fi connection. If your internet at home tends to be spotty, it might help to sit closer to your router during the call or ask a family member to check your connection speed beforehand.

If you don’t have Wi-Fi, many smartphones can also use cellular data for video calls. Just keep in mind this may use up more of your monthly data than usual.

The Right App or Website

Your doctor’s office will usually tell you which app or website to use for your visit. This might be a patient portal or a video calling app.

Before your appointment, ask the office to walk you through exactly how you’ll be joining the call. Many clinics are happy to send simple written instructions, and some will even do a quick test call with you ahead of time to make sure everything works.

A Quiet, Well-Lit Space

Find a spot in your home where you can sit comfortably and hear clearly. You don’t need a perfect setup. Just somewhere calm where you can focus on the conversation.

Your Health Information Handy

Just like an in-person visit, it helps to have a few things nearby. This includes a list of your current medications, any recent symptoms or concerns you want to mention, and a pen and paper to jot down notes from the doctor.

Having these within reach means you won’t have to get up and search for anything mid-appointment.

A Little Patience with the Technology

Even the most tech savvy among us have had a call freeze or a microphone that didn’t want to cooperate. If something goes wrong, take a breath. Try closing and reopening the app, or restarting your device. Most clinics have a phone number you can call if the video isn’t working, so you can still speak with your doctor even if the picture won’t load.

Remember, learning something new takes practice. Your second telehealth visit will feel much easier than your first, and by your third, it may feel as natural as a phone call with a friend.

Telehealth: Making Healthcare More Convenient

Telehealth was designed to make healthcare more convenient, not more complicated. With a device, an internet connection, a quiet space, and a bit of preparation, you’ll be ready for your first virtual visit. And once you try it, you may find yourself wondering why you didn’t do it sooner.

If you have an upcoming appointment, don’t hesitate to call your doctor’s office and ask how to get set up. They want your visit to go smoothly just as much as you do.
