Is Your Home Making Your Allergies Worse?

As we get older, our immune systems change, and many Kiwis find that allergies in seniors become more noticeable later in life, even without a childhood history of hay fever or sensitivities. While pollen and pets often get the blame, the truth is that the home itself can be a major hidden trigger.
Dust and Ageing Carpets
Older homes across New Zealand, especially villas and bungalows with wall-to-wall carpet, tend to trap dust mites, pet dander, and mould spores over the years. For seniors, whose respiratory systems are often more sensitive, this can lead to persistent sneezing, itchy eyes, and a scratchy throat that feels like a permanent cold. Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter vacuum and washing bedding weekly in hot water can make a noticeable difference.
Dampness and Mould
New Zealand’s damp climate, particularly through Auckland, Wellington, and the South Island winters, makes mould a common issue in older or poorly insulated homes. Mould spores are one of the most overlooked causes of allergies in seniors, often mistaken for asthma or general winter illness. Keeping bathrooms and kitchens well ventilated, using extractor fans, and fixing leaks promptly can help reduce exposure.
Heating Systems and Air Quality
Many senior households rely on heat pumps or older heaters that recirculate indoor air without filtering it properly. Dust and allergens can build up in these systems over time. Cleaning or replacing filters every few months and airing out rooms daily, even in cooler months, helps keep indoor air fresher.
Cleaning Products and Fragrances
Strong fragranced cleaning products, air fresheners, and even some laundry powders can irritate sensitive airways. Choosing fragrance-free or gentle alternatives is a simple change that often brings relief.
Simple Steps Forward
Reducing allergy triggers at home does not require major renovations. Small, consistent habits such as improving ventilation, reducing clutter that traps dust, and choosing allergy-friendly cleaning products can meaningfully ease symptoms over time.
If sneezing, congestion, or breathing difficulties continue despite these changes, it is worth speaking with a GP or pharmacist, as allergies in seniors can sometimes overlap with other health conditions that deserve a closer look.
