We tend to notice our feet only when they hurt. A blister, sore spot, or uncomfortable pair of shoes can quickly change that. But your feet can sometimes show early signs of problems that deserve more attention, particularly as you get older.

Start by looking at your feet regularly. Check for cuts, blisters, swelling, changes in skin colour, corns, calluses, or areas that look different from usual. A small mirror can help you see the soles if reaching them comfortably is difficult.

Pay attention to changes in sensation as well. Persistent numbness, tingling, burning, or a feeling that your feet are unusually cold can have several causes and should be discussed with your GP, particularly if the symptoms are new or getting worse.

Foot problems can be especially important for people with diabetes. High blood glucose over time can damage nerves and affect circulation, meaning injuries may be harder to notice and slower to heal. Regular foot checks are therefore an important part of diabetes care.

Your footwear matters, too. Shoes that are too tight can cause pressure points, blisters, and other problems. Look for footwear that fits comfortably, provides adequate support, and gives your toes enough room to move.

Don’t try to cut away corns or calluses yourself with sharp objects. If a painful area keeps returning, a podiatrist or other healthcare professional can advise you on the safest way to manage it.

A wound that doesn’t appear to be healing normally deserves particular attention. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, or worsening pain can indicate an infection and should be assessed.

Looking after your feet isn’t simply about comfort. Healthy feet help you stay mobile, confident, and independent—and those things become increasingly valuable as the years go by.

A quick check while you’re getting dressed or changing your socks could help you notice a problem before it becomes a much bigger one.
