Will Your Licence Let You Drive Overseas?

Hiring a car can make a holiday much easier, particularly if you’re visiting several towns or travelling somewhere where public transport is limited. But having a valid New Zealand driver licence doesn’t automatically mean you can drive wherever you go.
Some countries accept a current New Zealand licence for visitors, while others require an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. The rules can also depend on how long you’re staying and the type of vehicle you intend to drive.
This is something to sort out before you leave rather than at the rental counter. A car hire company may ask to see additional documentation, and if you don’t have what’s required, you could find yourself unable to collect the vehicle you’ve already paid for.
Start by checking the driving requirements for the specific country or countries on your itinerary. Don’t assume neighbouring countries have identical rules. If your road trip crosses a border, you may need to meet a different set of requirements once you enter another country.
Your licence itself should also be current and easy to read. If it is damaged, expired, or missing important information, resolve that before travelling. It’s worth carrying your physical licence even if you normally rely on a digital version of your documents at home.
An IDP is not a replacement for your New Zealand licence. Where one is required, you generally need to carry both. Make sure you understand the validity period and that the permit covers the countries you plan to visit.
There’s another detail that can catch travellers out: age restrictions. Rental companies may impose minimum or maximum age requirements, or charge additional fees depending on the driver’s age. These conditions can vary between companies, so read the rental terms rather than relying solely on the headline price.
And if you’re travelling with another person who might take over the driving, check their requirements too. An additional driver may need to present their own licence and meet the same conditions.
A road trip gives you freedom to explore at your own pace. Just make sure your paperwork gives you the freedom to get behind the wheel in the first place.
