A bath towel can stay in your linen cupboard for years without attracting much attention. If it still has a recognisable pattern and isn’t falling apart, it’s easy to assume it’s perfectly good. But towels eventually reach a point where washing them simply isn’t enough to bring them back to their best.

One obvious sign is poor absorbency. A towel that seems to push water around rather than actually soak it up may have accumulated product residue, fabric softener, or simply worn down over time. If you find yourself rubbing rather than drying, it may be time to reconsider that particular towel.

Then there’s the smell. If a towel develops a musty odour shortly after washing, the problem could be how it’s being dried or stored. Make sure towels are spread out properly after use and completely dry before being folded. Avoid leaving damp towels bunched up on the bathroom floor or in a laundry basket.

Fabric softener can also make towels less absorbent by coating the fibres. You don’t necessarily need to use it every time you wash them. Following the care instructions and giving towels enough room to dry properly can help them last longer.

Have a look at the towels you actually use. You may discover that you have a cupboard full of mismatched, worn-out towels while continuing to reach for the same two or three favourites. There’s little benefit in keeping a dozen towels that nobody wants to use.

That doesn’t mean every old towel needs to go into the rubbish. Worn towels can be useful as cleaning cloths, for drying muddy shoes or paws, or for other messy jobs around the house. Just separate them from the towels you use after bathing so there’s no confusion.

Finally, consider whether you have enough good towels for your normal routine. If you’re constantly waiting for the laundry to finish before you have a clean, comfortable towel, adding one or two quality replacements may be more useful than buying a large new set.

A towel is hardly an exciting household purchase. But when you have one that’s soft, absorbent, and properly cared for, you notice the difference every morning.
