Why Train Travel Feels Different

Ask someone about their favourite holiday and they’ll usually tell you where they went. Ask someone who travelled by train, and they’ll often tell you about the journey instead.

There’s something refreshing about travelling at a slower pace. Once you’re settled into your seat, there’s no need to concentrate on traffic, follow a GPS, or worry about finding a parking space. The landscape quietly unfolds outside the window while you simply watch it pass by.

It’s no surprise that many retirees are rediscovering train travel.

Unlike flying, there’s no pressure to arrive hours early or squeeze toiletries into tiny bottles. Unlike driving, there’s no need to stay alert for hours behind the wheel. You can read a book, chat with your travelling companion, enjoy a coffee, or simply do nothing at all. These days, doing nothing feels like a luxury.

Train travel also encourages you to notice places you’d normally speed past. Rolling farmland, small country towns, rivers, and mountain ranges become part of the holiday rather than something to get through as quickly as possible. It’s a reminder that not every memorable travel moment happens after you arrive.

Of course, trains won’t suit every trip. If you’re exploring remote areas, hiring a car may still make more sense. But for destinations where rail is an option, it can transform the entire experience.

Many travellers also find themselves striking up conversations they might never have had on a plane. A recommendation for a café, a story from someone who’s taken the journey dozens of times, or simply sharing a window view as the scenery changes can become unexpected highlights.

Retirement offers something many people didn’t have during their working years: the freedom to travel without rushing. You no longer have to squeeze a holiday into a long weekend or race back for Monday morning.

Sometimes the destination is still the highlight. Other times, it’s the gentle rhythm of the train, the changing view outside the window, and the feeling that, for once, there’s no reason to hurry.
