Our eyes work hard throughout the day. Reading, watching television, driving, using a phone, and spending time on a computer can all leave your eyes feeling tired. Occasional eye strain is common, but persistent discomfort shouldn’t simply be dismissed as part of getting older.

Eye strain can cause several symptoms. Your eyes may feel dry, watery, gritty, or sore, and you might experience blurred vision or headaches. Spending long periods concentrating on something close up can make these symptoms more noticeable.

Dry eyes are another common reason for ongoing discomfort. Tear production can change with age, while certain medications, heating, air conditioning, and windy environments can make dryness worse. Some people describe the sensation as though there’s something caught in their eye.

Small changes to your routine may help. When reading or using a screen, take regular breaks and look into the distance for a few moments. Make sure your reading area is well lit, and avoid having a bright screen in an otherwise dark room.

If your eyes feel dry, try to avoid sitting directly in front of an air conditioner or heater. Your optometrist or pharmacist can also advise you about suitable lubricating eye drops if needed.

Regular eye examinations remain important even when your vision seems fine. An optometrist can check for changes in your eyesight and screen for conditions that may not produce noticeable symptoms in their early stages.

Seek prompt medical attention if you experience sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, new flashes or a large number of floaters, or a sudden change in your vision.

Our eyes help us navigate almost every part of daily life. Looking after them is about protecting your independence and quality of life for the years ahead.
