Your bowel habits probably aren’t something you think about very often. But when your usual routine suddenly changes, you may notice it more than you expect. You might become constipated, need to go more often, or find that your stools are different from what you’re used to.

Occasional changes are common. Your diet, how much fluid you drink, how active you are and some medicines can all affect your bowel movements. A change in routine, such as travelling or spending more time sitting at home, can also make a difference.

Constipation can become more common with age, particularly when you’re less active or taking certain medicines. Rather than simply putting up with it, look at the basics first. Drinking enough water, eating fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruit, wholegrains and legumes, and staying physically active can all help keep things moving.

It’s also worth paying attention to medicines. Some commonly used medicines and supplements can contribute to constipation. If you think something you’re taking may be affecting your bowel habits, speak with your doctor or pharmacist rather than stopping prescribed medicine yourself.

The important thing is to recognise what’s normal for you. There’s no single number of bowel movements that everyone should have. What matters more is a noticeable and persistent change from your usual pattern.

Don’t ignore changes that continue or are accompanied by symptoms such as blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal pain or a significant change in the appearance of your stools. These symptoms don’t necessarily mean something serious is wrong, but they are worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

If your bowel routine has changed and isn’t returning to normal, make an appointment with your GP. Keeping track of when the change started and what you’ve noticed can make the conversation easier.

Your bowel habits may not be the most glamorous topic of conversation, but they’re one of the everyday signs your body gives you. Paying attention to changes is a simple part of looking after yourself.
