A few aches and pains are part of life. After gardening, a long walk, or a busy day around the house, it’s not unusual to feel a little stiff. But if joint pain is becoming a regular part of your day or stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, it’s worth having it checked.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and becomes more common with age. It can affect the knees, hips, hands, feet, and other joints. Symptoms often include pain during movement, stiffness after resting, swelling, or a reduced range of motion. Many people notice it’s harder to open jars, climb stairs, or get up from a chair.

Although there isn’t a cure for osteoarthritis, there are many ways to manage it. Staying active is one of the most effective. Gentle activities such as walking, swimming, or cycling can help keep joints flexible and strengthen the muscles that support them. Resting completely for long periods may actually make stiffness worse.

Maintaining a healthy weight can also reduce pressure on weight-bearing joints, particularly the knees and hips. Even a modest reduction in weight may improve comfort and make everyday movement easier.

Heat and cold packs may provide temporary relief for some people, while a physiotherapist can recommend exercises tailored to your needs. If pain is affecting your sleep or limiting your daily activities, speak with your GP. They can discuss treatment options, review your medications, and refer you to other health professionals if appropriate.

It’s also important to seek medical advice if a joint becomes suddenly swollen, red, hot, or extremely painful, especially if you also have a fever. These symptoms may indicate a condition that requires prompt treatment.

Living with joint pain doesn’t mean giving up the activities you enjoy. The earlier you seek advice, the more options you may have to manage your symptoms. With the right support and a few practical changes, many people continue to stay active, independent, and involved in the hobbies and routines they love.
