Most people experience heartburn from time to time. A rich meal, spicy food, or eating too close to bedtime can leave you with an uncomfortable burning feeling in your chest. While occasional heartburn is common, symptoms that keep coming back shouldn’t be ignored.

Heartburn usually happens when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. This is known as acid reflux. As we get older, reflux can become more common because the muscles that help keep stomach acid in place may become less effective.

You might notice a burning sensation after meals, a sour taste in your mouth, frequent burping, or discomfort that becomes worse when you lie down. Some people also develop a persistent cough, hoarseness, or the feeling of a lump in the throat without realising acid reflux may be the cause.

A few simple changes can often help. Eating smaller meals, avoiding large meals late in the evening, waiting a couple of hours before lying down after eating, and maintaining a healthy weight may reduce symptoms. It can also be useful to identify foods that seem to trigger your heartburn, as these vary from person to person.

Over-the-counter medicines may provide temporary relief, but they aren’t always the best long-term solution. If you’re relying on them regularly or your symptoms continue for several weeks, arrange an appointment with your GP. Ongoing reflux sometimes requires further investigation or prescription treatment to prevent complications.

Seek medical attention promptly if you have difficulty swallowing, pain when swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood, or black, tarry stools. These symptoms require urgent assessment and should not be attributed to simple heartburn.

Occasional heartburn can happen to anyone. But if it’s becoming a regular part of your life, it’s worth finding out why. Managing reflux early can improve your comfort, protect your oesophagus, and help you enjoy meals without the discomfort that follows.
