After a day of walking the dog, tending the garden or keeping up with the mokopuna, tired feet can leave you longing for the couch. The good news is that a few simple habits can bring real comfort at the end of the day. Here are some gentle ideas that many Kiwi seniors find helpful.

Put Your Feet Up

Raising your legs above hip level for 15 to 20 minutes can help ease heaviness and swelling. Rest on the sofa with a few cushions under your calves and enjoy a cuppa or your favourite radio programme. Drinking enough water through the day also supports healthy circulation.

Try a Warm Foot Bath

A warm footbath for about 10 minutes can relax tight muscles and help tired feet feel refreshed. Add a handful of Epsom salts if you like. Test the water with your elbow first, as older skin can be more sensitive to heat, and dry carefully between your toes afterwards.

Give Your Feet a Gentle Massage

Massaging the soles, heels and toes with a moisturising cream can improve comfort and keep skin soft. Use your thumbs to apply light pressure along the arch. Rolling a tennis ball under your foot while seated is another easy option. If bending is difficult, a handheld massager may be a good alternative.

Stretch and Move

A few ankle circles, toe curls and calf stretches can encourage circulation and loosen stiff joints. Sit comfortably, lift one foot and trace the alphabet in the air with your toes. Even a few minutes each evening can make a noticeable difference.

Check Your Footwear

Well-fitting shoes are one of the best defences against tired feet. Look for cushioned soles, good arch support, a roomy toe box and secure fastening. Shop for shoes later in the day when your feet are slightly larger, and replace pairs that are worn out. At home, supportive slippers are kinder to your feet than bare soles on hard floors.

Caring for your feet helps you stay active and independent. Small, regular habits can turn tired feet into comfortable ones, so you can keep enjoying the walks, hobbies and time with loved ones that matter most.
