The Travel Insurance Detail That Matters on a Multi-City Trip

Booking a holiday that includes several cities can be an exciting way to see more of the world in one trip. You might spend a few nights in Singapore, continue to London, then catch a train to Edinburgh before flying home. But when your itinerary involves several flights, train journeys, and accommodation bookings, one delay can disrupt much more than a single afternoon.

The important detail is how your travel insurance treats missed connections and interrupted journeys. Some policies provide cover when a delay causes you to miss a separately booked flight or other onward transport, but the conditions vary. A delay that qualifies under one policy might not qualify under another, particularly when you booked each leg independently.

Imagine your flight from Auckland to Singapore arrives three hours late, leaving you unable to board your separately booked flight to Rome. You may need to buy a replacement ticket, pay for another night’s accommodation, or rearrange airport transfers. Before travelling, find out whether your policy covers these additional costs, what evidence you must provide, and whether a minimum delay applies.

It is also worth distinguishing between a missed connection on one ticket and a self-transfer. When an airline sells you a connecting journey under one booking, it will generally have responsibilities for getting you to your destination if a disruption occurs, subject to the applicable rules. With separate tickets, you may be responsible for reaching the next departure yourself.

Travel insurance can help in some circumstances, but it is not a guarantee that every extra expense will be reimbursed.

Keep your booking confirmations, ticket receipts, and any written explanation of a delay. If a disruption happens, ask the airline or transport operator for documentation and contact your insurer before spending substantial amounts on replacement travel, where practical.

Finally, read the policy before paying for the trip, not while standing at a crowded airport desk. A few minutes spent understanding missed-connection cover can help you decide whether a complicated itinerary offers the freedom you want without exposing you to costs you had not anticipated.
