Waiting several hours for a connecting flight can make even an exciting holiday feel tiring. Airport lounges offer a quieter place to sit, refreshments, charging points, and sometimes showers, but entry fees can make them seem like an unnecessary luxury. Before paying at the door, it is worth checking whether you already have access through a benefit you are not using.

Some premium credit cards include airport lounge visits as part of their travel benefits. Others provide access through a membership programme, sometimes with a separate fee for each visit. The rules vary between cards, and a benefit advertised as lounge access may require registration or apply only to selected airports. Your bank’s website or card benefits guide should explain what is included.

Airline loyalty programmes can offer another route. Depending on your status, ticket class and airline alliance, you may qualify for lounge entry even when travelling on an economy ticket. However, eligibility can depend on the airport, route, and operating airline, so confirm the conditions before planning your stop around a particular lounge.

If you are travelling with a partner or friend, ask whether your benefit includes a guest. Some memberships allow a companion to enter free, while others charge an additional fee. Children may also be subject to separate conditions. A benefit that covers only the cardholder may be less useful if you usually travel together.

It is also worth comparing the price with what you actually need. If you have a short layover, paying for lounge access may not be worthwhile. For a longer wait, a quieter seat, reliable Wi-Fi, and a meal could make the cost more reasonable, particularly if you would otherwise spend money at airport cafés. Check the lounge’s opening hours and location, too, as some are outside the terminal or require a lengthy walk.

Before departure, confirm whether your lounge benefit needs to be activated in advance and whether you must present a physical card, digital membership, or boarding pass. Do not assume that having a particular bank card automatically guarantees entry.

Airport lounges are not essential for comfortable travel, but an existing benefit can make a long journey more pleasant without adding much to your costs. A quick review of your card and airline benefits before booking could reveal an option you already have.
