The Deleted Photo Might Not Be Gone Yet

You delete a photograph by mistake and immediately regret it. Perhaps it was a family picture, an important document, or simply a photo you thought you no longer needed. Before assuming it’s gone forever, check whether your phone has a recently deleted folder.
Many smartphones and photo apps temporarily keep deleted photographs rather than removing them immediately. This gives you a window in which to restore something you’ve accidentally thrown away.
On an iPhone, deleted photos are normally moved to the Recently Deleted album in the Photos app. Android phones vary depending on the manufacturer and the photo app you’re using, but Google Photos also has a Bin where deleted items can remain temporarily.
The important word is temporarily. Deleted items are not necessarily stored indefinitely. The length of time varies depending on the device or service, so don’t treat the recently deleted folder as permanent storage.
The same principle applies to some messaging apps and email services. A deleted message may be moved to a trash or recently deleted section rather than disappearing immediately. If you’ve removed something important, look there before trying more complicated recovery methods.
It’s also worth checking your backups. If your photographs are being backed up to a cloud service, another copy may still exist even if you’ve removed the image from your phone. Be careful, though. Deleting an item from a synchronised service can sometimes remove it from other devices as well, so understand how your particular backup works before making further changes.
You can also use this feature as a safety net when clearing out your phone. Instead of worrying that one wrong tap will permanently erase a treasured photograph, you know there is usually a temporary recovery option.
Just don’t wait too long. If you realise you’ve deleted something important, check the relevant recently deleted or bin folder straight away. And before deleting large numbers of photographs, take a moment to make sure they are backed up somewhere you trust.
Accidental deletion happens to everyone. The good news is that on many modern devices, “deleted” doesn’t always mean “gone.”
