The Balance on Your Bank App Can Be Misleading

You check your banking app before heading to the shops and see $2,000 sitting in your account. It looks straightforward. But if you’ve recently used your card, that figure may not tell the whole story.

Card payments can take time to fully process. A transaction may appear as pending while the money has effectively been set aside, or a recent payment may not yet have appeared in the account history at all. The exact way this is displayed varies between banks.

This is why the balance you see isn’t always the same thing as the amount you should treat as freely available. A hotel deposit, petrol station payment, or online purchase can sometimes create a pending transaction that affects what you can actually spend.

Take a look at your banking app’s transaction screen rather than relying only on the headline balance. If you see payments marked as pending, factor them into your calculations before making another large purchase.

This can be particularly useful when you’ve made several card purchases close together. A restaurant meal might still be pending while you make another payment the following day. If neither transaction has fully appeared in the way you expect, it can be easy to think you have more available money than you really do.

Automatic payments can add another layer of confusion. If your power bill, insurance, or other regular expense is due shortly, remember that money may already be committed even if the payment hasn’t left your account yet.

If you’re unsure about the difference between your current balance and available balance, ask your bank to explain exactly how it displays pending transactions. Don’t assume every bank uses the same terminology.

You can also make things easier by keeping a simple record of unusually large purchases or upcoming bills. You don’t need to track every cup of coffee. The idea is simply to avoid relying on one number when several payments are still being processed.

Most of the time, your banking app gives you a useful snapshot of your finances. Just remember that a snapshot isn’t always the complete picture.

Before making a large purchase, take a moment to look at what’s pending as well as what’s already cleared. That extra glance can prevent an unpleasant surprise the next time you check your account.
