The App You Deleted May Still Be Charging You

Deleting an app can feel like the end of the relationship. You no longer use it, you remove it from your phone, and forget about it. There is just one problem: deleting the app does not necessarily cancel the subscription attached to it.

That means you could still be paying for an app you have not opened in months. The charge may appear alongside other small digital purchases, making it particularly easy to overlook.

If you use an iPhone, open your Apple account settings and look at your subscriptions. On Android, check the subscriptions section of your Google account. The exact menus can change with software updates, but both platforms provide a way to see recurring subscriptions connected to your account.

Do not assume that every subscription will appear there, though. Some services take payment directly through their own website rather than through Apple or Google. If you remember signing up for a service outside the app store, check the company’s website or your bank statements as well.

Pay attention to the renewal dates. A subscription might be inexpensive each month but renew annually at a larger amount. If you no longer use the service, cancelling before the next renewal can prevent another charge.

It is also worth checking which subscriptions are genuinely useful. Perhaps you signed up for a free trial to test a fitness app, language course, or streaming service and forgot to cancel it. Free trials often become paid subscriptions automatically once the trial period ends.

Be careful when cancelling. Use the subscription settings or the service’s official website rather than clicking a cancellation link in an unexpected email. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, open the service directly instead.

You do not need to cancel everything simply because it costs money. A subscription you use regularly can be perfectly worthwhile. The problem is paying for something you no longer remember having.

Set aside ten minutes every few months to look through your recurring digital payments. You may discover nothing at all, which is fine. But if there is an app quietly taking money from your account despite having disappeared from your phone months ago, you will be glad you looked.
