You go to bed feeling perfectly fine and wake up with an incredibly painful big toe. It’s red, swollen and so tender that even the weight of the bedsheet feels uncomfortable. While there are several possible causes of sudden joint pain, this is a classic description of a gout attack.

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid in the body. When uric acid levels remain too high, crystals can form inside the joints, triggering sudden and intense inflammation. The big toe is commonly affected, although gout can also occur in the feet, knees, fingers, wrists, and elbows.

An attack can develop surprisingly quickly, often during the night. The affected joint may become hot, red, swollen, and extremely painful. An attack can last several days, although prompt treatment can help control the symptoms more quickly.

If you’ve never experienced gout before, don’t simply assume that’s what you’re dealing with. A painful, swollen joint can have other causes, so it’s important to see your healthcare provider for an assessment, particularly if the pain is severe or you’ve developed other symptoms.

If you already have gout, having a plan for attacks can make a difference. Healthify recommends contacting your healthcare provider for appropriate treatment, with early treatment helping to control an attack. Resting the affected joint and using a wrapped ice pack can also help with discomfort.

Gout isn’t something that only needs attention when it hurts. Without treatment to control uric acid levels, crystals can remain in the joints between attacks and eventually cause joint damage. Gout can also affect the kidneys, which is another reason to take recurring attacks seriously.

The good news is that gout can be managed. If you’ve had unexplained attacks of sudden, severe joint pain, talk to your doctor rather than simply waiting for the next one. Getting the right diagnosis and treatment plan can help protect your joints and make those painful episodes much less disruptive.
