A change of scenery can do wonders, but if you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea, a night away takes a little extra planning. The device may be part of your usual bedtime routine, and leaving it behind simply to save luggage space could affect how well you sleep during your trip.

Start by contacting your airline before departure. Rules for carrying and using medical equipment can vary, particularly when a device has a battery or needs to be connected during the flight. Explain which machine you use and ask whether it counts towards your usual cabin baggage allowance. If you are flying with more than one airline, confirm the requirements with each carrier.

For the accommodation itself, confirm that your room has a suitable power socket beside the bed. If your machine uses a humidifier, ask your equipment provider whether you need to bring distilled water or make any adjustments for travel. Pack the machine, mask, tubing, and power supply together, preferably in its protective case, and keep them in your carry-on luggage.

International travel adds another consideration: electricity. Check the voltage requirements of your device and whether you need a compatible travel adaptor. An adaptor changes the plug shape, not the voltage, so consult the manufacturer’s guidance before connecting your machine overseas.

If you hope to use your CPAP during a flight, contact the airline well ahead of time. Air New Zealand requires medical clearance and approval for onboard CPAP use, with advance notice and specific equipment requirements. Do not assume that a seat’s USB port or power outlet will be suitable for medical equipment.

Finally, ask your accommodation whether backup power is available if outages are a concern, particularly if you are staying somewhere remote. Keep the airline’s instructions and your device manufacturer’s travel guidance handy, and speak with your healthcare provider if you are unsure how to manage treatment during your trip.

Your CPAP machine may not be the most exciting item in your suitcase, but planning for it can make sleeping away from home much less complicated. With the practical details sorted before departure, you can focus on enjoying the holiday rather than worrying about bedtime.
