Staying Hydrated During Hot Weather

When temperatures rise, staying hydrated becomes more important than ever. While most people know they should drink water during hot weather, many older adults are surprised to learn that the body’s ability to recognise thirst can decrease with age. This means dehydration can sometimes occur before you even feel thirsty.
Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, supports digestion, and keeps joints and muscles functioning well. It can also help maintain energy levels and concentration throughout the day. During periods of hot weather, making hydration a priority can go a long way towards protecting your health and wellbeing.
One of the simplest ways to stay hydrated is to drink water regularly throughout the day, rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Keeping a water bottle nearby can serve as a helpful reminder. If plain water feels a bit boring, try adding slices of lemon, cucumber, or berries for extra flavour.
Foods can also contribute to your daily fluid intake. Water-rich options such as watermelon, oranges, strawberries, cucumber, and tomatoes can help keep you hydrated while providing important vitamins and minerals.
It’s also important to pay attention to beverages that may contribute to fluid loss. Drinks containing high amounts of caffeine or alcohol can sometimes increase dehydration, especially when consumed in large quantities. Balancing these drinks with plenty of water is a good habit during warmer months.
When spending time outdoors, try to schedule activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon. Wearing lightweight clothing and seeking shade when possible can also help reduce the risk of overheating.
Some signs of dehydration to watch for include dry mouth, dizziness, headaches, dark-coloured urine, and unusual tiredness. If you notice these symptoms, increasing your fluid intake and moving to a cooler environment may help.
Staying hydrated doesn’t have to be complicated. By drinking fluids regularly, eating water-rich foods, and taking sensible precautions in hot weather, you can help your body stay comfortable, healthy, and ready to enjoy the season.
