Snack Smarter Between Meals

Snacking often gets a bad reputation. In reality, a well-chosen snack can help keep your energy levels steady, provide important nutrients, and stop you becoming so hungry that you overeat at your next meal. The key is choosing foods that nourish your body rather than simply filling the gap until dinner.
Aim for snacks that combine protein with fibre. This combination helps you feel satisfied for longer and provides a slower release of energy. A handful of unsalted nuts, a piece of fruit with a small serving of cheese, Greek yoghurt with berries, or wholegrain crackers with hummus are all good options.
If you’re someone who enjoys biscuits or slices with your afternoon tea, you don’t have to give them up completely. Instead, think about balance. Enjoy them as an occasional treat while making healthier choices your everyday habit. Small changes are often easier to maintain than strict rules.
Planning ahead can also make healthy snacking much simpler. Keep washed fruit in a bowl on the kitchen bench, portion nuts into small containers, or prepare vegetable sticks to keep in the fridge. When nutritious options are easy to reach, you’re more likely to choose them.
It’s also worth asking yourself whether you’re truly hungry. Sometimes we eat because we’re bored, stressed, or simply following a routine. Before reaching for a snack, try having a glass of water or taking a short walk. If you’re still hungry afterwards, your body is probably telling you it’s time to eat.
If you have diabetes or another health condition that affects your diet, follow the advice of your GP or accredited dietitian when choosing snacks. They can recommend foods that suit your individual needs and help you manage your condition safely.
Choosing nourishing snacks can help you stay energised, support healthy ageing, and make it easier to enjoy a balanced diet every day.
