Protect Your Skin From Everyday Sun Exposure

You don’t have to spend the day at the beach to get significant sun exposure. Walking to the shops, gardening, sitting outside with a cup of tea, or watching a grandchild’s sports game can all add up over time. After years of everyday exposure, your skin can show the effects—even if you rarely think of yourself as someone who “sunbathes.”
As we age, skin becomes thinner and more fragile, which can make it particularly important to protect it from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Sun exposure contributes to premature skin ageing and increases the risk of skin cancers.
Make sun protection part of your normal routine when UV levels are high. A broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, clothing that covers exposed skin, shade, and sunscreen can all help reduce exposure.
Sunscreen works best when used correctly. Choose a broad-spectrum product with an appropriate SPF, apply enough to cover exposed areas, and reapply as directed—particularly after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget commonly missed areas such as the ears, back of the neck, hands, and tops of the feet.
Gardening deserves particular attention. It’s easy to spend several hours outside without realising how much sun you’ve had. A hat, long sleeves, and regular breaks in the shade can make a significant difference.
It’s also worth getting to know your own skin. Keep an eye out for new spots or changes in existing moles, including changes in size, shape, colour, or behaviour. A sore or scaly patch that doesn’t heal should also be checked by a healthcare professional.
Don’t assume that sun damage is something you can no longer do anything about. While you can’t undo previous exposure, protecting your skin now can still reduce ongoing UV exposure and help protect your skin in the future.
Sun protection isn’t just for holidays. It’s part of looking after your skin whenever you’re spending time outdoors. A few simple habits can help you continue enjoying your garden, walks, and outdoor activities while giving your skin the protection it deserves.
