Photos of grandchildren, family holidays and special milestones are precious. Yet many Kiwis still keep them only on a phone or tablet, where one drop, spill or lost device could erase years of memories. Google Photos offers a simple way to keep your pictures safe, and you do not need to be a tech expert to use it.
What Is Google Photos?
Google Photos is a free app that stores your photos and videos online, in what is often called the cloud. Once your pictures are backed up, you can view them on a phone, tablet or computer, even if your original device is lost or broken. It works on both Android and Apple devices. You will need a Google account, which is free to set up with an email address.
How to Start Backing Up
Download the Google Photos app from your app store and sign in with your Google account. When asked, turn on the backup option. From then on, new photos you take will be copied to your account whenever your device is connected to Wi-Fi. Many people choose to back up on Wi-Fi only, which helps avoid using up mobile data.
Finding Photos Made Easy
Scrolling through thousands of pictures can be tiring. Google Photos lets you type a word into the search bar, such as beach, birthday or a family member’s name, and it will show matching pictures. Your photos are also sorted by date, so you can find that Christmas gathering from years ago in moments.
Sharing With Family
Sharing is simple. You can send a link or create a shared album so family in Auckland, Australia, or further afield can enjoy the same photos. There is no need to post printed copies or send large email attachments.
Keeping Your Account Safe
Every Google account comes with a set amount of free storage, shared with Gmail and Google Drive, so check your storage now and then in the app. Use a strong password that you do not use anywhere else, and consider turning on two-step verification for extra protection. Keeping your phone updated also helps protect your account.
