For many people, the arrival of spring brings blooming flowers, warmer weather, and more time outdoors. Unfortunately, it can also bring seasonal allergies. While allergies are often associated with younger people, they can continue to affect older adults and, in some cases, even develop later in life.

Common seasonal allergy symptoms include sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, coughing, and fatigue. These symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for a cold or other health condition, making it important to pay attention to patterns. If symptoms appear around the same time each year, allergies may be the cause.

One of the best ways to manage seasonal allergies is to limit exposure to allergens when possible. On days with high pollen levels, consider keeping windows closed and spending less time outdoors during the middle of the day when pollen counts are often at their highest. If you’ve been gardening or spending time outside, changing clothes and washing your hands afterwards can help reduce exposure.

Keeping your home clean can also make a difference. Regularly vacuuming carpets, dusting surfaces, and washing bedding can help remove allergens that find their way indoors. Using an air purifier may also improve indoor air quality for some people.

It’s equally important to stay on top of your overall health. Drinking plenty of water can help ease irritation in the nose and throat, while getting enough sleep supports the body’s ability to cope with seasonal changes.

If symptoms become bothersome, it’s worth speaking with your doctor or pharmacist. Some allergy medications can interact with other medicines or cause side effects, so it’s important to choose options that are appropriate for your individual health needs.

Don’t let allergies keep you from enjoying the outdoors altogether. Planning activities after rain, when pollen levels are often lower, can help make outdoor time more comfortable.

Seasonal allergies can be frustrating, but they don’t have to take over your life. With a few practical adjustments and the right support, you can enjoy the changing seasons while keeping symptoms under control.
