Losing Weight Without Trying? It’s Worth Getting Checked

Many people work hard to lose weight. So, if the numbers on the scales begin to drop without any effort, it may seem like a welcome surprise. However, unintentional weight loss, particularly in older adults, shouldn’t be ignored.
There are many possible reasons for losing weight unexpectedly. A reduced appetite, dental problems, changes in taste or smell, certain medications, digestive disorders, an overactive thyroid, diabetes, depression, or other medical conditions can all contribute. Sometimes, people simply don’t realise they’re eating less than they used to.
Weight loss can also lead to a gradual loss of muscle. This may leave you feeling weaker, make everyday tasks more difficult, and increase your risk of falls. If your clothes are becoming noticeably looser or friends and family have commented that you’ve lost weight, it’s worth paying attention.
Keep an eye on any other symptoms as well. Ongoing tiredness, changes in bowel habits, persistent pain, difficulty swallowing, or a loss of appetite are all important details to mention to your GP. Together, they can help identify whether there’s an underlying cause that needs investigation.
In the meantime, try not to skip meals. Include a source of protein with each meal, snack on nourishing foods if your appetite is small, and stay well hydrated. If eating has become difficult because of sore teeth, dentures, or swallowing problems, let your healthcare provider know, as these issues can often be treated.
Your GP may recommend blood tests, scans, or other assessments depending on your symptoms. In some cases, you may also be referred to an accredited dietitian, who can help you maintain a healthy weight while ensuring you’re getting the nutrients your body needs.
Weight naturally changes throughout life. But losing weight without trying isn’t something to dismiss as a normal part of ageing. Finding the reason early can lead to more effective treatment, help protect your strength, and keep you enjoying an active and independent lifestyle.
