While arthritis can bring stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility, many seniors continue to live active, fulfilling lives by learning how to manage symptoms and support their joints.

Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is not a single disease but a term used to describe more than 100 conditions that affect the joints. The most common types include osteoarthritis, which comes from wear and tear over time, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints.

Symptoms often include joint pain, swelling, stiffness (especially in the morning), and reduced flexibility. These symptoms can vary from mild to more severe, and they may come and go in cycles.

Staying Active Without Overdoing It

Movement is one of the most important parts of managing arthritis. While it may feel counterintuitive to exercise when joints are sore, gentle activity can actually reduce stiffness and improve function.

Low-impact activities are often best. Walking, swimming, cycling, and stretching exercises help keep joints flexible without placing too much stress on them. Even a short daily walk can make a meaningful difference over time.

The goal is consistency, not intensity. It is better to move a little every day than to do too much on one day and rest for several days afterward due to pain.

Managing Pain and Stiffness

Heat and cold therapy are simple tools that many people find helpful. A warm shower or heating pad can relax stiff joints, while cold packs may help reduce swelling after activity.

Rest is also important, but balance is key. Too much rest can lead to increased stiffness, so it is helpful to alternate between activity and recovery.

Eating for Joint Health

While there is no specific diet that cures arthritis, healthy eating can support overall joint health. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help reduce inflammation in the body.

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, sardines, and walnuts, are often recommended. Staying well hydrated also supports joint lubrication and overall energy levels.

Arthritis may require adjustments, but it does not have to stop you from doing the things you enjoy. The right approach, support, and habits make it possible to continue living a comfortable and active life at any age.
