A long-haul flight is often the first step towards an unforgettable holiday. Whether you’re heading overseas to visit family or exploring a destination you’ve always wanted to see, spending 10 or more hours on a plane can be tiring. Fortunately, a little preparation can make the journey much more comfortable.

Dress with comfort in mind. Loose-fitting clothing, layers that are easy to add or remove, and supportive shoes can help you adapt to changing cabin temperatures. A lightweight jumper or scarf is also useful if the air conditioning feels cooler than expected.

Try to move around regularly during the flight. Even if it’s only a short walk to the galley or a few gentle stretches near your seat, changing position every couple of hours can help reduce stiffness. When you’re seated, flexing your ankles, rotating your feet, and gently stretching your legs can encourage circulation.

Staying hydrated is just as important. Aircraft cabins have very low humidity, which can leave you feeling dehydrated. Drinking water throughout the flight is a simple way to feel better when you arrive. It’s also worth going easy on alcohol, as it can contribute to dehydration and disrupt your sleep.

Sleep can make a big difference on overnight flights. A neck pillow, eye mask, and a good pair of noise-cancelling or comfortable in-ear headphones can help you rest more easily. If you take regular medication, keep it in your carry-on bag and stick to your usual schedule as closely as possible, particularly if you’re crossing time zones.

Finally, don’t feel pressured to do everything as soon as you land. If you’ve travelled a long distance, give yourself time to adjust. A gentle walk, a good meal, and an early night may do more for your holiday than trying to fit too much into your first day.

The journey is part of the travel experience. Arriving well rested and feeling your best means you’ll be ready to enjoy every moment once your adventure begins.
