Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean counting every calorie or following the latest food trend. One of the easiest ways to improve your diet is to include a wider variety of colourful foods throughout the week. Different fruits and vegetables contain different nutrients, so the more colours you eat, the more likely you are to give your body the vitamins and minerals it needs.

Green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, and silverbeet are rich in nutrients that support healthy bones and eyesight. Orange vegetables like pumpkin and carrots provide beta-carotene, while red foods such as tomatoes and capsicums contain antioxidants that contribute to overall health. Blueberries, blackberries, and purple grapes add another range of beneficial plant compounds to your meals.

You don’t need to include every colour at every meal. Instead, aim for variety across the day. Add sliced banana or berries to your breakfast, include a colourful salad with lunch, and serve two or three different vegetables with your evening meal. Even a handful of frozen mixed vegetables is an easy way to brighten your plate.

Shopping seasonally can make healthy eating more affordable. Fruit and vegetables that are in season are often fresher, tastier, and less expensive. Frozen produce is another excellent option, as it’s usually packed soon after harvesting and retains much of its nutritional value.

Remember that healthy eating isn’t about perfection. There will always be birthdays, family dinners, and favourite treats to enjoy. What matters most is your overall pattern of eating rather than any single meal.

Making colourful choices can also make food more enjoyable. A plate filled with different textures, flavours, and colours is often more satisfying than one that looks the same every day.

Adding a little more variety to your plate today is a simple step that can support your health for the long run.
