It’s not the sort of topic people often talk about. Yet constipation is one of the most common digestive problems affecting older adults. While it can occasionally happen after travelling or changing your routine, ongoing constipation shouldn’t simply be accepted as a normal part of ageing.

There are many possible causes. Eating too little fibre, not drinking enough fluids, reduced physical activity, and certain medications can all slow down the digestive system. Conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or bowel problems may also contribute, which is why persistent symptoms deserve medical attention.

Fortunately, simple lifestyle changes are often enough to help. Aim to include plenty of fibre-rich foods such as wholegrain bread, oats, fruit, vegetables, beans, and lentils in your diet. Drinking enough water throughout the day and staying physically active can also encourage regular bowel movements. Even a daily walk can make a difference.

Try not to ignore the urge to use the toilet. Delaying a bowel movement can sometimes make constipation worse. Establishing a regular routine, particularly after breakfast when the bowel is naturally more active, may also help.

Laxatives can provide short-term relief, but they aren’t always the best long-term solution. If you find yourself relying on them regularly, speak with your GP or pharmacist. They can help identify the cause of your symptoms and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Seek medical advice promptly if constipation is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, or a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts for several weeks. These symptoms should always be investigated.

Good digestive health plays an important role in your overall wellbeing. If constipation is becoming a regular part of your life, don’t assume it’s simply because you’re getting older. The right advice and a few simple changes may be all it takes to help you feel more comfortable again.
