Moving house usually means updating your address with the obvious places: the electricity company, insurer, doctor, and perhaps your friends and family. Financial accounts can be easier to overlook, particularly if you rarely receive anything by post.

Banks, investment providers, insurers, and other financial services may still hold your previous address. Keeping those details current matters because important statements, replacement cards, security information, or other correspondence may be sent there.

Start with your bank accounts and credit cards. Check the address attached to each account, especially if you have accounts with more than one financial institution. Do not assume that changing your address with one bank automatically updates every financial service you use.

Then think beyond everyday banking. Your insurance policies, KiwiSaver provider, investment accounts, and finance companies may have separate customer records. If you have a financial adviser or accountant, make sure they also have your current contact details.

An old address can also become a security concern. If sensitive correspondence is accidentally sent to a previous property, someone else may receive information intended for you. Keeping your records current reduces the chance of important documents going astray.

You do not need to remember every account from memory. Your recent bank statements and emails can help you build a quick list of financial providers you have dealt with. Work through them one by one and update your details directly through their official website, app, or customer service team.

It is also worth checking whether your phone number and email address are still correct. These details can be just as important as your physical address when a provider needs to verify your identity or contact you about unusual activity.

Moving house is already a long list of jobs. Updating financial details may feel like one more administrative chore, but it is the sort of task that is much easier to deal with before an important letter or replacement card ends up at your old front door.
