Taking more than one medication is common as we get older. Many people manage prescriptions for different health conditions, along with vitamins or over-the-counter remedies. While each medicine may be helpful on its own, some combinations can reduce their effectiveness or increase the risk of unwanted side effects.

This is why it’s important to have your medications reviewed regularly. Your GP or pharmacist can check whether everything you’re taking still suits your current health and whether any medicines might be interacting with one another. It’s also an opportunity to see if any dosages need adjusting or if certain medications are no longer necessary.

Don’t forget to mention the products you buy without a prescription. Pain relievers, herbal supplements, sleep aids, and even some cold and flu medicines can interact with prescription medications. Because they’re readily available, it’s easy to assume they’re always safe, but that’s not necessarily the case.

It’s a good idea to keep an up-to-date list of everything you take, including the dosage and how often you take it. Store the list on your phone or keep a printed copy in your wallet so it’s available if you visit a new doctor, pharmacist, or hospital. It can also be helpful for a trusted family member or carer in an emergency.

If you notice new symptoms after starting a medication, such as dizziness, confusion, unusual tiredness, or stomach problems, don’t ignore them. They may be unrelated, but they’re worth discussing with your healthcare provider. Never stop taking a prescribed medicine without medical advice, even if you suspect it’s causing side effects.

Medicines can do an excellent job of helping us stay healthy. Making sure they work well together is just as important as taking them correctly. A regular medication review is a simple step that can improve your safety, reduce unnecessary side effects, and give you greater confidence in your everyday care.
