Colour Your Plate for Better Health

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. One of the simplest ways to improve your diet is to look at the colours on your plate. A meal filled with a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables doesn’t just look more appealing. It also helps provide a wider range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support your health as you get older.
Think beyond green vegetables. Orange foods such as carrots and pumpkin are rich in beta-carotene, which supports eye health. Tomatoes and red capsicums contain lycopene, while blueberries, blackberries, and purple grapes provide plant compounds that may help protect your cells. Each colour offers something a little different.
That doesn’t mean every meal needs to be perfect. If lunch is mostly a sandwich, try adding sliced tomato, cucumber, or a piece of fruit on the side. At dinner, include two or three different vegetables instead of relying on just one. Small changes soon become everyday habits.
Frozen and canned vegetables can be just as useful as fresh ones, especially when certain produce is out of season. Choose varieties without added salt or sugar where possible, and keep a few on hand for days when you don’t feel like shopping or cooking.
Colour isn’t only about vegetables, either. Beans, lentils, wholegrains, nuts, and lean proteins all play an important role in a balanced diet. The goal isn’t to eat more of one food. It’s to enjoy a greater variety over the course of the week.
If your appetite isn’t what it used to be, focus on making each meal as nutritious as possible. A colourful salad, vegetable soup, or fruit topped with yoghurt can provide plenty of nourishment without feeling too heavy.
Healthy eating is about giving your body the variety it needs to keep working well. The next time you’re preparing a meal, take a quick look at your plate. A little more colour could be one of the easiest steps you take towards better health.
