Are You Drinking Enough Water Every Day?

It’s easy to underestimate how much water your body needs. As we get older, our sense of thirst naturally becomes less reliable. That means you may already be mildly dehydrated before you even feel thirsty. While it might not seem like a big deal, not drinking enough water can affect your energy, concentration, and overall wellbeing.
Dehydration doesn’t always announce itself with obvious symptoms. It can show up as headaches, dry mouth, tiredness, dizziness, or darker-than-usual urine. In some cases, it may even contribute to confusion or increase the risk of falls, particularly during hot weather or after physical activity.
Certain medications can also affect your fluid levels. Diuretics, commonly prescribed for high blood pressure or heart conditions, can increase the amount of water your body loses. If you’re taking medication that affects hydration, ask your GP or pharmacist whether you should take any extra precautions, especially during summer.
The good news is that staying hydrated doesn’t have to be complicated. Keep a water bottle nearby, drink a glass of water with each meal, and sip regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re thirsty. Foods with a high water content, such as watermelon, oranges, cucumbers, tomatoes, and soups, can also contribute to your daily fluid intake.
If plain water isn’t appealing, try adding slices of lemon, lime, or cucumber for a little flavour. Unsweetened tea and milk also count towards your fluid intake, although it’s still a good idea to limit sugary drinks and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.
If you’re experiencing persistent thirst, frequent dehydration, or difficulty drinking enough fluids because of another health condition, speak with your GP. They can help determine whether an underlying issue needs attention and advise you on the amount of fluid that’s right for you.
Staying hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support your health. A few extra glasses of water each day can help you feel more energetic, think more clearly, and continue enjoying the activities that make life fulfilling.
