Ageing Eyes Deserve Regular Check-Ups

It’s easy to assume that blurrier vision is simply part of getting older. While some changes to eyesight are expected with age, others may be caused by conditions that can be treated or managed more effectively if they’re detected early. That’s why regular eye examinations remain important, even if you think your vision is “good enough.”

Several eye conditions become more common as we age. Cataracts can make vision appear cloudy, age-related macular degeneration may affect central vision, while glaucoma can gradually damage the optic nerve without causing noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Diabetic eye disease is another concern for people living with diabetes.

Pay attention to changes that seem unusual. Difficulty reading in good light, increased glare from headlights at night, straight lines appearing wavy, or needing much brighter lighting than before are all good reasons to arrange an eye examination. Don’t wait until your vision has noticeably worsened.

Looking after your eyes also involves everyday habits. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet (UV) rays when you’re outdoors, eat a balanced diet rich in leafy greens and colourful vegetables, and give your eyes regular breaks if you’re reading or using a digital device for long periods.

If you wear glasses, don’t assume your current prescription will always be suitable. Vision changes gradually, and an outdated prescription can lead to headaches, eye strain, and unnecessary difficulty with everyday tasks.

Eye examinations can reveal more than vision problems. In some cases, optometrists may detect early signs of health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, allowing you to seek medical advice sooner.

Your eyesight helps you stay connected to the world around you. Regular eye checks can help identify problems early, support your independence, and keep you enjoying the people, places, and activities that matter most.
