Adult Children and Grandchildren Need Different Things

The relationship you have with your adult children naturally changes as they grow older. When they were young, you made decisions for them, organised their schedules, and stepped in whenever something went wrong. As adults, they may now have their own homes, partners, children, careers, and ideas about how they want to live.
That shift can take some getting used to. One of the most helpful things you can do is ask before offering advice. What worked for you when you were raising a family may not necessarily suit their circumstances today. A suggestion that’s well intentioned can sometimes feel like criticism when someone hasn’t asked for it.
Grandchildren can make the relationship even more rewarding, but they come with their own boundaries. Parents may have different rules around food, screen time, discipline, bedtime, and activities. Even if you would do things differently, respecting those decisions can help maintain trust.
At the same time, being a grandparent doesn’t mean you have to say yes to everything. Looking after grandchildren can be wonderful, but it’s reasonable to explain when you’re unavailable or when a particular arrangement doesn’t work for you.
Communication becomes especially important when expectations aren’t clear. If you’re being asked to provide regular childcare, financial help, or practical support, talk openly about what’s manageable rather than agreeing and becoming resentful later.
Try to leave room for the relationship to be enjoyable, too. Not every conversation needs to involve parenting advice, family logistics, or solving a problem. A coffee together, a shared meal, or an outing with the grandchildren can simply be time spent together.
Your adult children don’t need another parent telling them how to run their lives. They need a parent who recognises that they’re adults—and a grandparent who can offer love, experience, and support without taking over. That balance can take some practice, but it can make family relationships much easier for everyone.
