You went to bed at a reasonable hour, slept through most of the night, and still woke up feeling as though you had barely rested. It is tempting to blame a busy week or simply assume you need more sleep. But if this keeps happening, the problem may not be the number of hours you spend in bed.

Fatigue is different from ordinary tiredness after a late night or a busy day. Healthify describes it as a feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy that may continue even after rest. Persistent fatigue can have many causes, including disrupted sleep, illness, medication, poor nutrition, and emotional stress.

Your sleep may also be less restorative than you realise. You might wake repeatedly without remembering it, have a disrupted sleep pattern or have a condition that interferes with the quality of your sleep. Getting older can bring lighter and more interrupted sleep, but Healthify advises against assuming ongoing sleep problems are simply an unavoidable part of ageing.

Medication is another detail worth considering. Some medicines can contribute to tiredness or drowsiness, particularly when several medicines are being taken together. If your fatigue began after starting a new medicine or changing a dose, mention the timing to your doctor or pharmacist rather than changing the medication yourself.

Pay attention to what happens during the day as well. Are you struggling to concentrate, losing interest in usual activities, feeling weak or needing to sit down more often? Keeping a simple note of your sleep, energy levels, medicines, and other symptoms for a week can give your healthcare provider a clearer picture.

Persistent fatigue deserves particular attention if it is affecting your normal routine or comes with other changes such as unexplained weight change, ongoing fever, breathlessness, changes in bowel habits, or extreme thirst. Healthify recommends speaking with a healthcare provider when fatigue does not improve with rest or begins interfering with daily life.

One tired morning is nothing to worry about. But if you are repeatedly waking after a full night’s sleep and still feel completely drained, do not automatically write it off as getting older. Your body may be telling you that something needs a closer look.
