Smell is one of those senses you rarely think about until it stops working properly. Then suddenly your morning coffee has little aroma, your favourite curry seems strangely flat, or you cannot tell whether something in the fridge has started to spoil.

A reduced or altered sense of smell can happen for relatively ordinary reasons. Colds, sinus problems, allergies, and nasal congestion can temporarily affect it. Some medicines can also change how things smell or taste. But if the change persists without an obvious explanation, it is worth mentioning to your healthcare provider.

Smell and taste are closely connected. When your sense of smell is reduced, food can seem less enjoyable even when your taste buds are working normally. That can make some people lose interest in eating or compensate by adding more salt or sugar, which may not be ideal if they are already managing their diet for another health reason.

There is another practical issue: safety. Your sense of smell can help alert you to smoke, gas, or food that has spoiled. If you notice that you can no longer detect familiar smells, make sure smoke alarms are working and do not rely on your nose alone to decide whether food is safe to eat.

It can be useful to notice whether the change is complete or partial. Perhaps you can smell strong scents but not subtle ones. Perhaps familiar smells suddenly seem different or unpleasant. Writing down when the change began and whether anything else happened around the same time can give your doctor useful information.

Do not assume that a change in smell is simply part of getting older. There are many possible explanations, and the significance depends on what else is happening. If the change is sudden, persistent, or accompanied by other new symptoms, arrange a medical assessment.

Your sense of smell may not seem as important as your eyesight or hearing, but it plays a surprisingly large role in everyday life. If your morning coffee suddenly smells like almost nothing, do not just accept it as another small change. Sometimes a subtle shift is worth paying attention to.
