Why You Might Need More Pillows to Sleep Comfortably

Perhaps one pillow used to be perfectly comfortable, but lately you have been stacking two or three beneath your head. You might find yourself propping up your upper body to breathe more easily or waking during the night feeling unexpectedly breathless. It is easy to blame an uncomfortable mattress or getting older, but a new change in how you sleep deserves attention.
Breathing difficulties that become worse when lying flat can sometimes be associated with heart problems, including heart failure. When the heart struggles to pump blood effectively, fluid can accumulate in the lungs, making breathing more difficult when you lie down. Other possible symptoms include swollen ankles, unusual tiredness, a persistent cough at night, and becoming breathless during ordinary activities.
This does not mean that everyone who enjoys sleeping with several pillows has a heart condition. Some people prefer an elevated position because of reflux, certain respiratory conditions, or musculoskeletal discomfort. The important distinction is whether your sleeping position has changed because you are struggling to breathe, particularly if the problem is new or getting worse.
Pay attention to what happens when you lie down. Do you feel short of breath within minutes? Do you need to sit upright before you can breathe comfortably? Have you started waking suddenly at night gasping for air? Notice whether these changes occur alongside swollen feet or ankles, a new cough, reduced stamina, or unexplained weight gain.
If you are experiencing new or worsening breathlessness when lying flat, contact your GP promptly rather than waiting for your next routine appointment. Your doctor may examine your heart and lungs and arrange tests, such as blood tests or an electrocardiogram, depending on your symptoms.
Seek emergency medical help if you develop sudden or severe difficulty breathing, particularly alongside chest pain, fainting, or confusion.
You do not need to become alarmed simply because you prefer a higher pillow. However, if you need extra pillows because lying flat has become uncomfortable for your breathing, do not dismiss the change as an ordinary part of ageing. Recognising it early can help you get the right assessment and treatment.
