You finally get comfortable in bed, then your legs start feeling strangely restless. Perhaps there is an unpleasant crawling, tingling, or pulling sensation, and moving your legs is the only thing that seems to make it better.

This can be more than ordinary restlessness. Restless legs syndrome is a condition that creates a strong urge to move the legs, usually when you are resting. The sensations tend to be worse in the evening or at night, which can make falling asleep or staying asleep difficult.

The feeling is not always easy to describe. Some people experience aching or tingling, while others describe it as an uncomfortable internal sensation rather than actual pain. You may find yourself repeatedly shifting position, stretching your legs, or getting out of bed simply because keeping still feels unbearable.

Restless legs syndrome can have several possible causes or contributing factors. Healthify lists iron deficiency among them, along with conditions such as kidney disease and diabetes. Some medicines and high caffeine intake can also be associated with the condition.

The timing is one of the useful clues. If the sensation mainly appears when you are sitting or lying down and improves when you get up and move around, mention that pattern to your GP. It can help distinguish restless legs syndrome from ordinary leg discomfort.

Keep a note of when it happens and what makes it better or worse. You might notice a connection with coffee or tea later in the day, certain medicines, long periods of sitting, or particularly poor nights of sleep.

Do not start taking iron supplements simply because you suspect an iron problem. A healthcare professional can decide whether testing is appropriate and investigate why your iron might be low.

If your legs regularly become so uncomfortable at night that you struggle to sleep, it is worth mentioning rather than accepting it as something you simply have to put up with. Restless legs syndrome is a recognised condition, and identifying the cause can help you find a more effective way to settle down at night.
