Your Charger May Need More Than an Adapter

Your Charger May Need More Than an Adapter

Packing a travel adapter is easy to remember. What is easier to overlook is that an adapter only changes the shape of the plug. It does not necessarily change the electricity coming from the wall.

New Zealand uses 230 volts, while other countries can use different voltages. Most modern phone and laptop chargers are designed to work across a range, but you should not assume every appliance you own can do the same. A quick look at the small writing on your charger can tell you what it is designed to handle.

Look for wording such as “Input: 100–240V”. If you see that range, the charger is generally designed to work with different mains voltages, provided you have the correct plug adapter. Phones, tablets, cameras, and laptops often fall into this category.

Older or higher-powered appliances deserve more attention. Hairdryers, straighteners, electric shavers, and heated styling tools may have different voltage requirements. Plugging a device into an incompatible supply can damage the appliance and potentially create a safety risk.

Consumer Protection advises taking care with electrical products bought or used across different markets, particularly where voltage and electrical standards differ.

Before your trip, make a short list of everything you intend to plug into a wall. Check the label on each item rather than relying on memory. You may discover that you only need one universal adapter and your existing chargers, or that one particular appliance is better left at home.

It is also worth checking whether your destination uses the same plug shape as New Zealand. A voltage-compatible charger is of little use if you cannot physically connect it to the socket.

Five minutes of preparation can save you from discovering at the hotel that your phone is fine but your favourite appliance is not. More importantly, it means you can pack only the chargers and adapters you actually need.
