A hotel booking usually comes with an arrival date, but that does not always mean someone will be waiting at reception all night. Smaller hotels, guesthouses, lodges, and holiday properties may have limited reception hours or a specific check-in cut-off.

This matters particularly when you have an evening flight, a long drive, or a connecting journey. A delay of a few hours could turn a straightforward arrival into a problem if you reach the property after reception has closed.

Before leaving home, look at the check-in information attached to your booking. Do not just note the date. Look for the latest arrival time, reception hours, and instructions for guests arriving outside normal hours.

Some properties offer late check-in through a key safe, digital lock, or night manager. Others may ask you to contact them in advance so they can arrange access. The process can vary considerably between properties, so knowing what to expect is much easier than trying to work it out after a long journey.

If your plans change, tell the accommodation as soon as you know. Keep their phone number somewhere easy to reach, rather than buried in an email you need an internet connection to find. A screenshot of the booking details can also be useful if you are tired, offline, or dealing with poor reception.

This is particularly worth considering when travelling somewhere unfamiliar. You may arrive after dark, have luggage to carry, and not know whether the entrance you can see from the street is actually the guest entrance.

A five-minute check before your trip can answer a simple but important question: If I arrive late, how exactly do I get inside? Once you know that, you can concentrate on getting there rather than worrying about what happens when you arrive.
