Your Smart Speaker May Be More Useful Than Music

A smart speaker may have started life as a convenient way to play music, but it can become much more useful once you explore what it can actually do.
One of the simplest features is setting timers and reminders without stopping what you are doing. You can ask the speaker to remind you about something later, set a timer while cooking, or create a recurring reminder for a regular household task.
It can also be useful for quick information. You can ask for the weather, a measurement conversion, the time in another country, or a simple calculation without reaching for your phone.
If you have compatible smart-home devices, a speaker may also control lights, plugs, or other equipment using voice commands. This can be particularly convenient when you are already comfortable with the device and have set everything up properly.
There are limits, of course. Voice recognition is not perfect, and commands can occasionally be misunderstood. For anything important, such as a medication reminder or an appointment, use your usual system as well rather than relying entirely on a voice assistant.
Privacy is another reason to understand the settings. Smart speakers are designed to respond to a wake word, and different manufacturers have different controls for recordings, activity history, and personalisation. Take a few minutes to look through the privacy settings for your particular device.
You can also make the speaker more useful by learning a small number of commands that fit your routine. There is no need to memorise a long list of functions. Perhaps you want weather information in the morning, a cooking timer in the evening, and reminders for particular household tasks.
If you have never explored the settings beyond playing music, have a look at the manufacturer’s guide. You may find that the device you already own can handle several small jobs you currently do manually.
Technology does not always need to solve a big problem. Sometimes saving yourself from repeatedly reaching for your phone is useful enough.
Your smart speaker may have been sitting in the corner playing the same playlist for years. It might be time to ask it to do something else.
