A few bubbles in the toilet after you urinate are hardly something most people think twice about. But if your urine regularly looks unusually foamy or frothy, it is worth paying attention to the pattern rather than automatically assuming it is nothing.

There are plenty of harmless explanations. A strong stream of urine can create bubbles, and dehydration can make urine more concentrated. Healthify NZ notes that dehydration may also make urine darker in colour.

Persistent foamy urine can have another explanation, however. Healthy kidneys normally prevent most proteins in the blood from passing into urine. When the kidneys are damaged, a protein called albumin can leak into the urine, a condition known as albuminuria.

You cannot confirm this simply by looking at the toilet. Healthify says the only way to know whether albumin is present is through a urine test. These tests can measure the amount of albumin and help healthcare professionals assess kidney health.

That is why a persistent change is worth mentioning, particularly if you have other risk factors for kidney problems. Diabetes and high blood pressure, for example, can increase the risk of kidney disease.

Also take note of other changes. Swelling around your ankles, hands, face or tummy, blood in your urine, unusual tiredness, or passing noticeably less urine are symptoms worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

There is no need to inspect every trip to the bathroom. If you notice something unusual once, see whether it settles. If the change keeps happening, particularly without an obvious explanation such as dehydration, make an appointment and mention exactly what you have noticed.

Your urine can provide useful clues about what is happening inside your body, but appearance alone cannot tell you what the cause is. A simple urine test can provide much more useful information than trying to diagnose the problem yourself.

Sometimes the bubbles really are just bubbles. If they keep appearing, though, they are worth mentioning.
