Foods That Support Healthy Nerves as You Age

Our nerves carry messages between the brain and the rest of the body, helping us move, feel, balance and think clearly. As we grow older, looking after them becomes even more important. No single food can prevent age-related changes, but a balanced way of eating gives your nervous system the nutrients it needs. Here are some everyday choices that suit Kiwi kitchens.

Oily Fish and Greenshell Mussels

Salmon, sardines and mackerel provide omega-3 fats, which help form the protective coating around nerve cells. Greenshell mussels, a proud New Zealand favourite, are another good source. Including fish in your meals a couple of times a week is a simple habit to build.

Leafy Greens and Colourful Vegetables

Spinach, silverbeet and broccoli supply folate and antioxidants that support nerve function. Silverbeet grows easily in a home garden, making it a handy and affordable choice. Kumara and pumpkin add vitamins and fibre to a hearty roast or soup.

Berries and Kiwifruit

Blueberries and strawberries are rich in antioxidants, which help protect cells from everyday wear and tear. Kiwi fruit adds vitamin C and is a tasty addition to breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Nuts, Seeds and Wholegrains

Walnuts, almonds and sunflower seeds offer vitamin E and healthy fats. Wholegrain bread, porridge oats and brown rice provide B vitamins, which play a key role in keeping nerves working well. A handful of nuts or a warm bowl of porridge is an easy way to start.

Eggs, Dairy and Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is especially important for nerve health, and the body can absorb it less easily with age. Eggs, milk, yoghurt, cheese and lean meat are all good sources. If you eat little or no animal food, or you often feel tingling or numbness in your hands and feet, it is worth chatting with your doctor.

Drink Well and Eat Together

Staying hydrated supports every part of the body, including the nervous system. Enjoying meals with family or friends can also lift your mood and make healthy eating more rewarding.
