There is a difference between deciding to take the lift and suddenly finding a flight of stairs much harder than it used to be. If you are becoming unusually breathless, weak, or exhausted halfway up, your body may be telling you something has changed.

Fitness naturally affects how difficult stairs feel. If you have been less active recently, even ordinary activities can become more tiring. Joint pain can also change the way you climb, particularly if your knees, hips, or ankles are uncomfortable.

But a noticeable change from your usual ability deserves some attention, especially if it happens without an obvious explanation.

Pay attention to what you actually experience. Are your legs tiring before your breathing becomes difficult? Are you becoming short of breath after only a few steps? Do you need to stop halfway when you previously climbed the same stairs comfortably? Are you feeling dizzy or experiencing chest discomfort?

Breathlessness can have many causes, including being out of condition, respiratory problems, anaemia, and heart conditions. Health New Zealand advises seeking medical attention for breathlessness that is new, worsening, or occurs with relatively little activity.

The timing can also be useful information. If your difficulty began after an illness, a period of inactivity or a change in medication, mention that to your healthcare provider. Do not assume that getting older is the only explanation.

There is an important distinction between ordinary exertion and a warning sign. If you develop severe difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, fainting, confusion, or a sudden deterioration, seek urgent medical help.

You do not need to turn every staircase into a fitness test. Simply notice when a familiar activity becomes noticeably harder. If that change persists, tell your doctor what you have noticed and when it began.

Stairs are useful because they give you an everyday reference point. You already know roughly how they used to feel. When that familiar effort changes, it can be a surprisingly useful clue about your health.
