The Fire Extinguisher in the Cupboard

A fire extinguisher is one of those things you buy with good intentions and then promptly forget about. It might be sitting in the garage, underneath the kitchen sink, or tucked away in a cupboard, quietly collecting dust while the rest of the household carries on.

That is not necessarily a problem. Fire extinguishers are designed to sit unused. But they still need to be accessible and in suitable condition if you ever need one.

Start by working out where yours actually is. If you would have to move boxes, open several cupboards, or search through the garage to reach it, that is worth reconsidering. In an emergency, those extra few seconds can matter.

Look at the extinguisher itself. Check that it is not visibly damaged, heavily corroded, or leaking. The pressure indicator, if your model has one, should be in the appropriate range. If you are unsure what the markings mean, follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing.

The type of extinguisher matters too. Different extinguishers are designed for different types of fires, so do not assume one model is suitable for everything in your home. The label should explain what it is designed to handle.

Avoid putting an extinguisher somewhere it could become difficult to reach during a fire. For example, keeping one directly beside a cooker may sound convenient, but if a fire starts on the cooker, you may not be able to get close enough to retrieve it. An accessible location nearby is more useful.

It is also worth making sure everyone in the household knows where it is. There is little benefit in having an extinguisher that only one person knows exists.

Most importantly, an extinguisher is not a reason to take unnecessary risks. If a fire is spreading, producing heavy smoke, or blocking your exit, get outside and call 111. Fire safety is about getting people to safety first, not trying to save the kitchen.

You may never need the extinguisher sitting in your cupboard. Hopefully you won’t. But spend a few minutes finding it, checking its condition and making sure everyone knows where it lives. Emergency equipment is much more useful when it is not treated like something that only exists in theory.
