The Garden Shed Needs a Safety Check

The garden shed is often where useful things go to disappear. Old paint tins sit beside gardening tools, extension cords get tangled in a corner, and something you haven’t used in years is pushed further towards the back. A quick tidy-up can make the shed safer and much easier to use.
Start with the floor. Tools, hoses, bags of potting mix, and other items left underfoot can become trip hazards. Keep frequently used equipment somewhere accessible and store longer tools securely against a wall.
Take a close look at your gardening tools while you’re there. Replace cracked handles, sharpen blunt blades where appropriate, and dispose of anything that’s too damaged to use safely. A tool that requires excessive force can be more hazardous than a sharp, well-maintained one.
Chemicals need particular attention. Check labels on fertilisers, weedkillers, pesticides, and cleaning products, and store them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep them away from food, animal feed, and anything children or pets could accidentally reach.
Paint and other old products deserve a second look, too. If you no longer know what’s inside a container, don’t open it casually or pour it down a drain. Check with your local council about safe disposal options for household chemicals and hazardous waste.
Don’t forget about lighting. If you regularly visit the shed in the early morning or evening, adequate lighting can make finding tools much safer. A simple rechargeable or motion-sensor light may be enough if there’s no permanent power supply.
Once everything has been sorted, think about what you actually use. If the same secateurs, gloves, and hand trowel come out every weekend, keep them within easy reach rather than buried behind equipment you rarely touch.
A tidy shed can reduce trip hazards, make tools easier to handle, and help you spot damaged or outdated products before they cause a problem. Sometimes, the most useful gardening job has nothing to do with the garden itself.
