Needing to rush to the bathroom, leaking when you cough, or occasionally not making it in time can be embarrassing to talk about.

But urinary incontinence is common, and it’s not something you simply have to put up with as you get older. There are different types of incontinence, and finding out which one you’re experiencing can help identify the right approach.

Some people leak urine when they sneeze, laugh, cough, or exercise. This is known as stress incontinence. Others experience a sudden, difficult-to-control urge to urinate, sometimes followed by leakage. This is called urge incontinence.

Several factors can contribute, including weakened pelvic floor muscles, prostate problems, constipation, urinary tract infections, certain medications, and conditions that affect the nerves or bladder. For some people, the problem develops after surgery or other changes in their health.

It’s worth paying attention to when leakage occurs and whether anything seems to trigger it. Keeping a brief record of your drinks, bathroom visits, urgency, and leakage can give your GP useful information during an appointment.

Don’t drastically reduce how much you drink in an attempt to prevent accidents. Not drinking enough can lead to dehydration and may make some urinary symptoms worse. Instead, ask your healthcare provider whether changes to your fluid intake, caffeine consumption, or bathroom routine could help.

Pelvic floor exercises can also be useful for some types of incontinence. A physiotherapist or other qualified healthcare professional can show you how to perform them correctly and advise whether they’re appropriate for you.

Speak with your GP if leakage is becoming frequent, interfering with activities, or making you avoid leaving home. Seek prompt medical advice if it occurs alongside blood in your urine, pain when urinating, fever, or a sudden significant change in your bladder habits.

Getting the right advice can help you regain confidence and get back to doing the things you enjoy without constantly worrying about an accident.
